We are using the cutting edge science of deep-space colonization here on Earth to teach our students STEM, experience new green technologies first hand and create food sufficiency for Alaskans.
We are teaching students how astronauts are growing food in deep space. They are exploring how to grow unlimited amounts of fresh produce from seed to harvest year-round. Students study impacts of air, indoor lighting options, water usage/reclamation, nutrient mixtures, different growing mediums, and temperatures and then getting to taste test delicious fresh produce.
Students are also sharing their harvest with our local community through donations to school back pack programs, food pantries, soup kitchens and food banks.

Space Farming Institute is at the intersection now of food, soil, water, climate, emerging green technology, sustainable agriculture, bio-fuels, and space exploration. It’s an exciting time and the voyage of discovery is just beginning.
Agriculture is the world's largest industry. It employs more than one billion people and generates over $1.3 trillion dollars worth of food annually. This nexus of sustainable food systems and bio-fuels will change what foods we eat year round, along with where and how we grow food for every community.
Alaska has a lot in common with NASA’s deep space exploration, from our complicated accessibility issues to our arctic climate with long months of freezing weather and darkness, we uniquely understand what a lunar colony will need to thrive. We are teaching new concepts necessary for success in the 21st century.

We are nonprofit organization established exclusively for educational, charitable, and scientific purposes; providing learning, hands-on practice and research programs for students, teachers, master gardeners and space enthusiasts to share ideas, learn the latest in space news and benefit our community.
In 2018 we began teaching students in their science classes how astronauts are growing food on the International Space Station in preparation for living in deep space. We use bio-regenerative practices like NASA and all planting materials must be recyclable and sustainable just like systems necessary for deep space colonization of the Moon and Mars. These students are a part of the Artemis generation. They are learning and using leading edge science and technology here on Earth.

Our students explore science through astrobotany, technology and engineering by growing food in air with aeroponics systems. Students are also helping to invent and design solutions for deep space colinization and Arctic living.

We are adapting to thrive.
Biofuels - are a renewable energy source, made from organic matter or wastes, that can play a valuable role in reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Biofuels are one of the largest sources of renewable energy in use today.
Biotechnology - utilizes biological systems, living organisms or parts of this to develop or create different products. Like NASA growing habitats for astronauts on the Moon and Mars.
Bioengineering - the application of engineering knowledge to the fields of construction, medicine and biology.
Students of all ages are learning in their classrooms how to grow fresh fruits, vegetables and edible flowers indoors year-round. We teach STEM by growing a variety of plants from seeds to maturity using different hydroponic methods. Students learn scientific writing by recording their observations in their hydroponic journals.
They also taste test locally grown and imported store bought foods comparing flavors, textures and nutritional content. Students learn healthy eating practices for life!
